While at that point, the business was still a surplus store, in 1980, Academy introduced sporting goods and outdoor recreational lifestyle gear like fishing, camping supplies. Over the next four decades, Academy Sports and Outdoors would see tremendous growth and popularity with Americans operating some 259 stores across 16 states and boasting a workforce of over 22,000 team members.
