About Crayola

Crayola is an incredibly popular brand which was founded in 1885 by Edwin Binney and Harold Smith. At the time, they were named the “Binney & Smith Company”.

In 1902, Binney & Smith, who were cousins, invented the iconic crayon. Edwin Binney’s wife coined the word “Crayola” which became their trade name. Now, more than a hundred years later, the brand manufactures more than 3 billion crayons a day.

Crayola does not solely sell crayons. The behemoth company manufactures and sells toys, paint, modeling clay, various coloring and writing tools, and much more. On the Crayola website, you can purchase a large variety of Crayola-branded merchandise. This selection includes clothing, face masks, slippers, holiday ornaments, and even train sets and umbrellas.

The Crayola brand is a household staple. It is popular with kids and adults alike. Teachers often prefer Crayola products for their classrooms over any other brand of school supply or art material.

When filling up your online shopping cart, be sure that you are taking advantage of every Crayola deal that exists. We will help you save as much money as you can so that you can buy all of the colorful merchandise and supplies that you need without hurting your wallet.

Crayola Shopping FAQs

Alice Binney came up with the name when a teacher combined the French words “craie” and “ola”. These words mean “chalk” and “oily” respectively. So Crayola basically means a crayon that is both oily and chalky.

Several color pigments and paraffin wax constitute the primary elements of the Crayola crayons. All of them are made of the same materials no matter the colors, length, or width. Not all crayons have a single color pigment. To form certain colors, like fuchsia, for example, they have to mix the pigments that create the color.

To make the crayons the process takes up to seven minutes until each crayon is solid and has cooled off. Firstly the wax has to melt at a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. After the hot wax mixture is ready, they pour them into the molding machines along with the appropriate pigments. However, due to the different amounts of pigment used in every crayon, some are more dense, thick, and viscous than others.

In 1902, while the company was still named Binney and Smith, they released the first Crayola box ever. This box contained only eight crayons. Each of different colors. The colors were yellow, blue, orange, violet, red, black, green, and brown.

The biggest crayon manufacturer in the world sells about 650 crayons per minute (worldwide). Which means they are selling almost 3 billion crayons each year. Its annual revenue is about 750 million dollars.

Most orders are shipped within 1-2 business days. Ground shipping takes 4-8 business days to arrive at your home. Express shipping arrives within 1-2 days. Custom products are shipped 3-4 weeks from the purchase date. Crayola only makes shipments on business days, so be wary when ordering.

Although Crayola does not announce these ahead of time they do seasonal and holiday sales, such as Black Friday, Summer sales, Winter sales, and more. They also offer smaller sitewide promotions running, such as BOGO or 40% off sales.

Crayola crayons and other art products are made at a factory in Easton, Pennsylvania. The brand is fully made in America. The Easton Crayola factory makes crayons at a rate of 650 crayons per minute, while also manufacturing its other products. This is an impressive rate of production.

Crayola products can be found in most retail locations. The brand is sold by all major retailers, anywhere that crayons or art supplies can be purchased. Crayola is hands-down the most popular art company and is very easy to find. Therefore, their products are not just found on the Crayola.com website.

Ever since I was a little girl I have used Crayola products in my artwork. Even now that I have moved on to professional art, I still like to pull out my little tabletop easel and a box of Crayola crayons and color!

I was looking for some educational gifts for young family members and someone suggested the Colors of the World coloring sets. I bought a few and they were a hit! Thank you, Crayola!

I purchased the Dough Classpack with Tools that came with more than 100 pieces. I am a school teacher and had a bunch of activities planned for my third graders. The shipment arrived quickly. The tubs of dough were a little small but the tools were great! Very happy with this purchase.
