About Eastbay
Eastbay began in 1980 as a joint business venture between two friends from Wausau, WI. High school coaches Art Juedes and Rick Gering decided to start selling track and field shoes to local athletes. Their business idea changed the way athletes shopped for shoes thanks to the shoe clinics they would organize to help runners select the right shoes.
As business picked up, the two friends expanded their offering to include basketball shoes. They also launched a catalog to start selling shoes via direct mail. Sales continued to increase, and Eastbay quickly became a major direct mail retailer.
In the 1990s, Eastbay launched its own brand of athletic wear with items that featured the yellow logo of the brand. The next step was to raise funds through an IPO.
The now publicly traded Eastbay company continued to do well, and F.W. Woolworth eventually acquired it in 1997. This company would change its name to Foot Locker four years later.
